Chronicle of the undeclared hybrid war "Cotton Bookkeeping"

"Ватна Бухгалтерія" ("Vatna Bukhhalteriia") translates as "Cotton Bookkeeping." The title of this book is derived from the word "вата" ("vata"), meaning cotton, and the term "ватник" ("vatnik"), which originally referred to a quilted cotton jacket. However, over time, "vatnik" has acquired an additional, negative meaning. It is a political pejorative used in Russia and other post-Soviet states to refer to steadfast jingoistic followers of Russian state propaganda.

This book is a textual collage with chapters written by the artist at different times and under less than ideal conditions. The drawings and the text are handwritten on Soviet paper from the 1980s-90s used for accounting and other administrative documentation. It reflects events that occurred in Ukraine between 2013 to 2015 and includes autobiographical details and Kharch’s perceptions and analysis of these events as an artist who is a living witness to and, to some extent, an active participant in them.
