Women's Education and Research Centre

The Women’s Education Centre (WEC) was founded in 1982 by Selvy Thiruchandran, Bernadeen Silva (former Deputy Director of Centre for Society and Religion), and Kumari Jayawardena. The main objective of the feminist researchers and activists at WEC was to highlight the status of women in the country and to publish material that could be used by women in their struggle for liberation. The broad objectives of WEC were to increase women’s awareness, their resources, and opportunities for effective participation in the economic, political and social life of the country.

Consequently, in 1991, the organization was renamed as Women’s Education and Research Centre (WERC). This archive highlights Women’s Rights movements in twentieth-century Sri Lanka, women’s literature, women’s issues related to law, economics, politics, sexuality, war, violence included in the annual journal Nivēdinī and the newsletter Pravahini.
