Definition of Terms


Amazigh ⴰⵎⴰⵣⵉⵖ: The free, noble person. Tamazight (fem). The plural of Amazigh is Imazighen.

Indigenous Knowledge: A set of knowledge created and theorized by Indigenous communities about their histories around the globe free from Western and colonial systems and information.

Kabyle ⴽⴰⴱⵉⵍ: The Amazigh people of Kabylia, a region in northern Algeria. Taqbaylit is the variety of Tamazight they speak.

Tagoula ⵜⴰⴳⵓⵍⴰ: A traditional Amazigh dish prepared during Yennayer. It is often made with barley or corn flour, cooked into a thick porridge or gruel.

Tamazgha ⵜⴰⵎⵣⵖⴰ: A term used by Amazigh scholars to refer to an imagined geography of Tamazight-speaking regions, stretching from the Canary Islands in the West, to Siwa in Egypt in the East, and to Mali and Niger in the South.

Tamazight ⵜⴰⵎⴰⵣⵉⵖⵜ: Refers to the language of the Amazigh people. It belongs to the Afro-Asiatic language family. Tamazight is also used to refer to a distinct language variety of the Middle Atlas mountains in Morocco. There are more than nine different varieties of Tamazight (see also fem. of Amazigh).

Tamazight language varieties: The different language varieties spoken by Imazighen in Tamazgha. These include: Tashelhit spoken in southern Morocco; Tamazight in central Morocco; Tarifit in northern Morocco; Taqbaylit in Tizi-Ouzou (Algeria); Tamzabit in Ghardaïa (Algeria); Tashawit in the Aurès Mountains (Algeria); Tasiwit in the Egyptian Western Desert; Tatouargit in southern Algeria, Niger, and Mali; Tamashek in Niger, Mali, and Nigeria; and Tamahaq in Libya and Nigeria.

Tamazight Standardization: The definition, meanings, and process of this phenomenon vary between Amazigh and non-Amazigh activists, as well as among states in Tamazgha. However, the general goal is to create a standardized variety of Tamazight that can serve as the lingua franca among the Imazighen. Efforts and legislation toward this goal are still ongoing.

Tifinagh ⵜⵉⴼⵉⵏⴰⵖ: It is a Libyco-Berber script used primarily to write Tamazight and other Berber languages. Tifinagh has undergone various changes over time, with its origins dating back over 2,000 years, making it one of the oldest scripts in the world.

Yennayer ⵢⴻⵏⵏⴰⵢⴻⵔ: it is the beginning of the agricultural year in the Amazigh calendar. Yennayer is a cultural celebration that centers around the connection of Imazighen to their land.
