Abstract:
Montana photograph album (“Montana Views and Scenes” on front flyleaf) consisting of 48 sepia-tone gelatin photographs (approx. 4.75” x 6.75” or 11 x 16 cm.). 25 images feature views of frontier lifestyles and scenery (ranches, mines, millworks, and equipment); 10 snapshots feature Assiniboine Indians and lifestyles; 7 feature soldiers and military life; and 6 feature local people and friends. Each image is captioned in white ink, mounted in black cloth album (7” x 11”). Presumably, the photographs were taken by an officer at Fort Assinniboine, near Havre, Montana, in the final years of 19th century.

Abstract:
Consists of 13 original gelatin silver prints taken by Frank Bennett Fiske of Indians of the Dakota Territory. The photographs were originally housed in a binder which was assembled by Fiske and Marion Jordan Piper, with accompanying typed identifications, biography and comments on the images. It was meant to be a prototype for a bound album representative of Fiske's work, and was to be offered for sale. The portrait of a Sioux mother and child has an imprint at the bottom which reads: Fiske Photo, Fort Yates, N.D. Also included is a brief biography of Fiske, and newspaper clippings of him and his wife.

Vroman. 11 prints feature interior and exterior images of California missions, including San Luis Rey and San Juan Capistrano; 5 images feature views of and along California railroads, notably Mount Lowe Railroad; 4 images are of Arizona pueblos; and 2 prints are of petrified forests in Arizona.

Photograph album (7" x 11"), containing 85 black/white photographs (3.25" x 5.5" and 3.5" x 3.5") and photographic postcards taken from September-October 1909, depicting cowboy life and work at the Bell Ranch (near Tucumcari, New Mexico). Included are photographs of ranch buildings and cowboys (branding, de-horning, herding cattle, riding horses, setting up the chuck wagon). Many show various polo match activities. The front pastedown bears the business card of "G. W. Von Schriltz, Tucumcari, New Mexico, Wells Fargo & Co. Express, Agent," one of the polo players identified in a ranch polo match and possibly responsible for the photographs.

Contains 49 gelatin silver print photographs (8 x 13.5 cm.), many captioned, of a Jicarilla boarding school and sanitarium near Dulce, New Mexico. 31 prints show Native American children of varying ages (including orphans receiving care), a hospital, a sanitarium, and a church; 10 photographs are of the Harper Simms family and others, including a print labeled Christmas 1931; 4 prints feature local Native Americans and dwellings; and 4 feature landscapes and scenes from the immediate reservation environs in Dulce, New Mexico. A typed information sheet lists many of the people pictured from the mission, as well as their roles in the orphanage, hospital, sanitarium, etc. A number of hand-written captions are illegible.

Contains 51 albumen print photographs by Isaiah West Taber of California collected by Cottier. Most measure around 20 x 24.5 cm. 20 prints feature many different scenes of Chinese-Americans in San Francisco's Chinatown (including interiors, business owners, religious sanctuaries, the Chinese Consulate, and street scenes); 24 prints feature views of scenes and buildings in San Jose, Menlo Park, Stanford, Palo Alto, and Monterey, California (including Standford University, Lick Observatory, Mission San Carlos Borromeo, Santa Clara College, Hotel del Monte, Hotel Vendome, and the estates of Leland Stanford, James Clair Flood, and Timothy Hopkins); 4 prints feature views from Shasta County, California, including some scenery along the California and Oregon Railway; and 2 photographs are of an execution of fifteen pirates in Kowloon, China. An additional photograph is of the planet Saturn as observed at Lick Observatory.

Contains 178 albumen and gelatin silver photographs (ranging from 23 x 19 cm. to 5 x 7 cm.) of New Mexico and Arizona, including cities, landscapes, Indian ceremonies and customs, and pueblos. The album consists of what are apparently snapshots taken by members of a touring party, along with photographs by professional photographers, notably W.A. White. 75 prints feature views of Native Americans and pueblos, including the Hopi and Zuni and identifiable pueblos at Taos, New Mexico and Walpi, Arizona. Some topics include dance, including what is very likely the San Geronimo (St. Jerome) feast at Taos and either the Snake or Flute Dance at Walpi; 69 prints feature views of the surrounding landscapes, modes of travel, or members of the traveling party; 21 prints feature "typical" scenes from daily life in and around the areas visited, including scenes of farming, ranching, and cityscapes (of which Albuquerque, New Mexico is known); 13 prints feature mission churches, among which the San Miguel Mission, Church of San Felipe, and Old Parish Church at Taos are identifiable.

Album of 91 photographs of scenes in Mexico, assembled in the 1880s. The images are by William Henry Jackson, Abel Briquet, and unidentified photographers. 61 of the photographs are by Jackson, with his titles and numbers in the 2000, 5000, and 6000 ranges. Nine are by Briquet, and the rest are uncredited professional images. The subjects include street scenes, city views, churches and other public buildings, people working, etc. The album is arranged in the following order: El Paso del Norte (2); Chihuahua (17); Zacatecas (10); Guanajuato (13); San Luis Potosí (23); Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco (7); Leon, Guanajuato (1); Iraputo, Guanajuato (1); Villa Lerdo, Durango (9); Toluca, Mexico (5); Maravaterio, Michoacán (1); and Tula, Hidalgo (2). Some specific subjects include: Cathedral at El Paso del Norte; Chihuahua from the Casa de Monedo; Street Merchants, Chihuahua; Mexican Laundry, Chihuahua; The Fountain, Zacatecas; The Chapel of the Bufa, Zacatecas; Mina de Sn. Rafael, Guanajuato; Street Scene; Guanajuato, Mina de Sn. Javier; Church of Carmen. San Luis Potosi; Aguadors at the Fountain. San Luis Potosi; In the Marketplace. San Luis Potosi; Along the River at Lagos; Irapuato Plaza de Armas; Villa Lerdo, Centro de la Plaza; Toluca. Cerro del Calvario; and Tula. Street View and Church. Among the uncredited images are nine large (7 3/4 x 9 1/4) views of remarkable unrehearsed street scenes in Villa Lerdo (now Ciudad Lerdo), Durango. Album in gilt leather and cloth, 10 1/4 x 13 1/2 inches. With "ALBUM" stamped in gilt on front cover. The majority of images are cabinet-card size, ca. 41/2 x 7 1/2 inches, some slightly larger or smaller.

Consists of an album of 196 silver gelatin photographs and 12 photographic postcards of scenes taken during a trip to see the Hopi Snake Dance at the pueblo at Walpi, Arizona, in August 1923. The prints measure 8 x 29.5 cm.; 8.5 x 17 cm.; 5.5 x 7.5 cm.; and 5.5 x 16.5 cm. Many of the larger prints have hand-written captions and dates on the verso. 90 prints feature the scenery of Arizona (the Mohave Desert, Sunset Crater, Painted Desert, Coal Canyon); 68 feature Hopi Indians, Hopi rites and ceremonies, Hopi villages, Hopi women and children, and Hopi dwellings at Walpi, Oraibi, and Shipaulovi; 27 feature touring scenes (picnics, hiking, camping, repairs to a Dodge automobile, and other scenes along the way); 11 feature a Hopi dance, most likely the Snake Dance, although they are not postcards and may have been taken illegally by the tour members. The "Snake Dance" photographic postcards contain images taken prior to the 1915 ban on photographing ceremonies. Laid-in newspaper clippings from the Stockton Daily Record in 1925 give an account of the journey from 18 to 29 August 1923.

104 albumen photographs document President Chester A. Arthur's excursion through Northwestern Wyoming to Yellowstone National Park in August of 1883. Views along the Presidential party's route include Fort Washakie; the Wind River Valley; the Snake River Valley; Gros Ventre River; the Grand Tetons and Gros Ventre range. Images of Yellowstone show geysers; waterfalls; Yellowstone Lake; Mammoth Hot Springs; and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Photographs also depict camp sites along the route; some portraits of Shoshoni and Arapaho Indians; two portraits of the President with members of his party.

Vroman's portraits and genre studies in Arizona, entitled "Arizona | Gates Party | Navaho's." It contains 100 platinum print (plainotype) photographs of Navajo Indians, Navajo towns and camps, and excavation sites in Arizona, including Keam's Canyon and the Jeddito Valley. The sites are featured as encountered by the Museum-Gates Expedition (1901) consisting of Peter Goddard Gates, a California philanthropist, and Dr. Walter Hough of the United States National Museum. A.C. Vroman was the official photographer of that expedition. The photographs (either 21 x 15.5 cm. or 15 x 19.5 cm.) are numbered 1100-1199 and each leaf features a manuscript caption in English.

Vroman's portraits and genre studies in Arizona, entitled "Arizona | Hopi | Pueblos." It contains 118 platinum print (plainotype) ethnographic photographs of Hopi Indians, Hopi pueblos, and the native lifestyle in Arizona. A topic of interest is the Hopi Snake Dance, photographed at the pueblo at Walpi. The Flute Ceremony at Oraibi is also featured, along with views of daily and family life at Mishongnovi. This album represents (at least in part) the cultural studies of the Museum-Gates Expedition (1901) consisting of Peter Goddard Gates, a California philanthropist, and Dr. Walter Hough of the United States National Museum. A.C. Vroman was the official photographer of that expedition. The photographs (either 21 x 15.5 cm. or 15 x 19.5 cm.) are numbered 1200-1299L and each leaf features a manuscript caption in English.
