INTRODUCTION

Visitors to this exhibition will encounter a wide-ranging selection of writers’ working manuscripts; first appearances in print; books annotated by authors, inscribed for friends, or collected by admirers; samples from authorial archives; publishers’ correspondence; novels read affordably as serials; portraits of writers and readers; original cover art; and many other points of connection with people who brought life to English literature around the world. In short, this exhibition is Princeton University Library’s invitation to discover not just Shakespeare, but all good books.
