Since the Meiji period (1868–1912), it has been a Japanese New Year tradition to play e-sugoroku, a board game similar to Snakes and Ladders. A sugoroku board is as much a vehicle for education and socialization as recreation, and lends itself to a wide range of subjects, usually presented with considerable visual flair. The editors of children’s periodicals designed new ones every year for distribution as supplements to the January issues. The two boards on display here are fine examples of propaganda that showcase talented artists with very different styles. Both were published by the boys’ magazine Shōnen Kurabu.
,The Army and Navy Complete Attacks Sugoroku is a race game for two players—one an admiral, the other a general. Its purpose is not only to reach the enormous siege gun at the end, but to teach the magazine’s readers about all the means of attack the Japanese Imperial Army could launch by land or by sea: tanks, long-distance artillery pieces, machine guns, grenades, poison gas, and dive bombing.
, andThe board of the Sea and Land Travel Competition Sugoroku is divided into two sections so that two teams of two players can compete against each other. After players roll the dice, the ones with even numbers take the track over land on the lower half of the board, and the ones with odd numbers take the upper track over the sea. The first team to reach the center by overcoming such obstacles as throwing a sumo wrestler overboard, avoiding a whale, and escaping a typhoon wins the game.

- Title in translation: Sea and land travel competition sugoroku.
- This sugoroku sheet, which was designed by the editors and distributed as a New Year's supplement to the boy's magazine Shōnen kurabu, is divided in half. Each half has its own starting point. Players who role odd numbers start at the top half, which shows two boys having various adventures and mishaps, as they travel by sea. Players who role even numbers start on the lower half, which depicts two different boys, heading off an adventure over land. The goal is for all four boys to end up at the center, reunited. The competition is over which team reaches the goal first.
