According to an entry in Audubon’s journal of 1824, in that year he sold his first wildlife drawing, an image of a grouse to be used by the printer Gideon Fairman on a New Jersey bank note. Two years later he documented giving a copy of the piece to a patron. Although no bank note corresponding to this story has ever been found, the identity of this image has been established by Robert M. Peck ’74 and Eric P. Newman. It appears that the note was never issued, but the image turned up on sheets of sample vignettes advertising the work of Fairman’s company and on unissued proof banknotes. The pieces on exhibit here were purchased from the estate of Eric P. Newman through support from the Friends of the Princeton University Library and comprise all known examples of the image.
