Ulmann and Peterkin’s collaborative publication focuses on the lives of a group of former slaves and their descendants in the Gullah coastal region of South Carolina. Their title derives from an eighteenth-century English spiritual that became popular among enslaved communities in America and was later appropriated as an encoded message of escape. Trained by the American pictorialist photographer Clarence White (1871–1925), Ulmann had already made thousands of ethnographic studies of the inhabitants of Appalachia, South Carolina, and Georgia in the 1920s and 1930s. Her sensitive and respectful portraits contrast with the anecdotal and paternalistic texts provided by Peterkin, a popular novelist whose husband owned the former plantation where many of the people depicted still lived. The beauty of Ulmann’s work is greatly enhanced by the tones and textures of the hand-pulled photogravure plates found only in this special edition of the book.
