During the Ming 明period (1368–1644) there appeared various books making predictions based upon celestial phenomena, usually with political implications. They were viewed with great suspicion by the government, with cause: the Ming dynasty itself had been established against such a background. By the eighteenth century, all such books were ordered to be destroyed, making extant ones extremely rare today. By coincidence, this hand-colored item was displayed during a conference where it happened to be the subject of a talk by a Chinese professor who knew about only four other copies in the world. Although this work has been ascribed to the strategist Liu Ji 劉基 (1311–1375), such attributions are spurious. The manuscript dates probably from the fifteenth century. Princeton has several such astrological works.
