- Roman Vishniac (1897–1990). Photographs of Albert Einstein in his office, Princeton, N.J., 1941.
- Curatorial note:
-
On display is one of four silver gelatin prints received as a gift from the photographer’s daughter, from the Roman Vishniac Archive at the International Center of Photography (New York). Three of the photographs show Einstein (1879–1955) seated in his office on the ground floor of Fuld Hall, at the Institute for Advanced Study. In the other, Einstein is writing computations on a large blackboard, possibly at another location.
,Vishniac was born near St. Petersburg, Russia, and is best known for his photographs of Jewish communities and life in Central and Eastern Europe just before the Holocaust. In 1941, when he visited Princeton to photograph Einstein, he and his family were living in New York City, where they found refuge after escaping from Vichy France.
