This is an unusual item: typeset with movable type, but perhaps printed from a wax imprint. The rebound work contains some of the earliest extant issues of an eighteenth-century Chinese newspaper that reported court memorials and examination results. A few libraries in China and Japan also hold some issues; a current hypothesis is that most derive from one and the same set. After its recent identification, our version was digitized to be used as the basis of an online translation/marking project at Yale that will also involve Princeton students. The newspaper shows not only what and how court information was distributed by a private publisher, but also suggests the many gray areas between official versus private spheres.
