• The American Jewess. 30 vols. Chicago: Rosa Sonneschein Co., 1895–1899.

Curatorial note:
  • The American Jewess was the first English-language periodical directed toward American Jewish women. Issued monthly from April 1895 to August 1899, it was intended, in the words of its editor, Rosa Sonneschein (1847–1932), to “connect the sisters dwelling throughout … this blessed country, concentrate the work of scattered charitable institutions, and bring them to the notice of the various communities as an imposing and powerful unit.” Articles mainly addressed literary, philanthropic, and religious topics, but also included illustrated short fiction, accounts of European travel, tips for household management, and repeated calls for female membership in synagogues. Although no institution owns all forty-six issues of The American Jewess, Princeton’s run of thirty issues includes the June 1897 issue, previously unknown.
