Curatorial note:

The Robert Schaaf Collection of Sasanian Coins: The Numismatic Collection acquired the Schaaf collection of 723 Sasanian coins in 2015 with funding support from the Sharmin and Bijan Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Iran and Persian Gulf Studies and the Friends of the Princeton University Library. The Schaaf collection provides a wide range of materials and denominations that are significantly rare in the Sasanian coinage system; it contains 18 unique gold coins, rare fractions like the one-sixth drachm, and a rich assemblage of copper and lead coins of previously undocumented types. Princeton’s acquisition of the Schaaf collection has led to scholarly progress by providing unknown and unpublished coins, undocumented variant legends, and a new set of control marks. It represents a significant addition to our knowledge of the coinage and history of the state that was the eastern rival to the Roman Empire.
