No expense was spared to commemorate the “joyous entry” of Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Spain, the new regent of the Spanish Netherlands, into Antwerp in 1635. Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), one of the most acclaimed painters of the era, designed the series of triumphal arches and other temporary architecture through which the regent’s party processed while entertained by tableaux-vivants, specially commissioned music at outdoor stages, and a display of fireworks. The multi-media spectacle was later recorded in this sumptuous festival book. Commissioned by the city of Antwerp, its thirty-eight full- and double-page prints by Theodor van Tulden (1606–1669), after the original oil sketches by Rubens, are accompanied by an erudite Latin commentary from Jan Caspar Gevaerts, a respected scholar and city official. Gevaerts’s flattering comparison of Ferdinand, recent victor at the battle of Nördlingen, with Caesar Augustus was part of the city’s campaign to maintain a good relationship with its new Habsburg “protector.”
