Curatorial note:

The graphic journalist Franklin McMahon covered momentous national events in politics, civil rights, scientific discovery, and human drama, turning out drawings and watercolors for major magazines and newspapers. His goal was to step beyond what he considered the limitations of photography to “see around corners.” In 1978, President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, President Jimmy Carter of the United States, and Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Israel (left to right at the desk in the painting) met secretly at Camp David in Maryland, where they agreed to frameworks for a peace treaty and for the establishment of self-rule for Palestinians living in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Sadat and Begin shared the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize for the Camp David Accords.
