- Journal of Robert Sawyer, Class of 1838.
- Curatorial note:
-
Sawyer’s journal begins with his final days as a Princeton student, but primarily documents his time as a Presbyterian missionary in Monrovia, Liberia, from 1841 until his death there in 1843. Sawyer describes in detail his interactions with tribesmen, kings, and governors; his efforts to build a school and to establish other missions; and his dealings with local people. His undergraduate entries note his worship with the Princeton African American Presbyterian congregation, revealing heretofore unknown connections between town and gown. Sources like this journal were used by the Princeton and Slavery Project to construct and understand the nature of racial relations within the college and town in the antebellum period.
