- Pentateuch, translated by William Tyndale. “Emprynted at Malborow in the lande of Hesse, by me Hans Luft” [Antwerp: Martin De Keyser and Joannes Grapheus], January 17, 1530.
- Curatorial note:
-
First edition, one of about ten recorded copies. William Tyndale, under the inspiration of Martin Luther, planned a modern English translation of the entire Bible, for which he prepared by serious study of Greek and Hebrew. He emigrated to Germany and the Low Countries, where he made translations first of the New Testament, then of the Pentateuch. His translations, with false imprints to protect the printers, were smuggled into England, outside the purview of the customs officers. Tyndale’s Pentateuch was issued in five parts, each with its own title-page. In 1535 Tyndale was captured in Antwerp, convicted of heresy by the Roman Catholic Inquisition, and, in 1536, burned at the stake.
