Abstract:
  • English language version of a newsletter published by the underground group, Lehi, an acronym for Loḥame ḥerut Yiśraʼel, "Fighters for the Freedom of Israel." Lehi, also known as the "Stern Gang," after its founder Avraham Stern. Lehi was a paramilitary group whose aim was to expel the British from Palestine using violence. Topics discussed in this newsletter include a withering analysis 22nd Zionist Congress, the first to meet after the Holocaust, arguing that mainstream Zionist bodies were weak, and unwilling to truly fight the British for independence. It mocks the "sad balance-sheet the Congress had to draw up: 6 million dead since the last Congress; 600 thousand "saved" since the first; more than a million in the hell of Europe..." (Issue No. 3, Jan. 1947).

Abstract:
  • In this pamphlet, LEHI rebuts the accusation that it is a fascist group, distinguishing between "fighters for the freedom of Israel" and "Hebrew fascism." LEHI argues that the British are a colonial and imperial occupier while the Jewish community is the native population fighting for its freedom - just as in other British imperial holdings such as India. The fight to expel the British, even if violent, cannot be fascist, it argues.

Abstract:
  • Irgun announcement of the charges and verdict against two British spies, held in an Irgun-run prison and tried in an Irgun-administered court. The prisoners, Clifford Martin and Mervyn Paice, worked for the British Army Intelligence Corps. They were captured by the Irgun in response to the death sentences imposed on three Irgun fighters after the Acre prison break, Avshalom Haviv, Yaakov Weiss, and Meir Nakar, executed on July 29, 1947. The next day, the Irgun executed Martin and Paice. The executions sparked anti-Jewish riots in Britain, and were widely condemned by the main Jewish institutions in the Yishuv and by David Ben-Gurion himself. The mainstream labor Zionist military organization, the Haganah, attempted to find and rescue the British prisoners. Nonetheless the execution, known as the Sergeants Affair, is credited with finally breaking the British will to remain in Palestine.

Abstract:
  • Irgun statement issued in response to violence at a Haifa oil refinery, where six Arabs were killed in an Irgun attack and 39 Jews were subsequently killed by Arab workers. The document argues that the killings of the Jewish workers were premeditated rather than a spontaneous retaliation for the initial attack. It also accuses the Haganah of exploiting the incident to discredit the Irgun at a time when the two organizations were negotiating cooperation ahead of Israel’s War of Independence.
