In the video artwork A Book, the camera frames one pair of hands progressively ripping pages out of a book and crumpling them up, while another pair attempts to smooth the crumpled pages and place them back in sequence. The video playfully encapsulates Carrión’s approach to the book form, disassembling the conventions of writing and reading in order to construct a new vision of the book’s structural capacities.

Carrión became deeply engaged in the medium of video in the 1980s, and he showed many of his video works at Time Based Arts, an organization founded in 1982 by his long-term partner Aart van Barneveld to support the exhibition and distribution of video art in the Netherlands. Time Based Arts became a hub for video artists in Carrión’s community. Three of his videos, including A Book, were featured in this set of 122 cards that Time Based Arts issued as a catalog of its activities.
