- Abstract:
-
- This scrap of binding waste was cut down by the binder with considerable loss of text on all four pages of the bifolium. Six Donatus fragments have been recorded using this type, formerly considered a Prototypography type. They are now thought to be from some anonymous Netherlandish shop of the late 1470s or early 1480s. Fragments in Düsseldorf of another Donatus edition using this type are printed on one side only, and must have been printing shop waste. They were discovered in the binding of a Brussels incunable of ca. 1482-1484 whose original owner was a priest belonging to the Hieronymite convent in Haarlem. This gives a hint, though not a strong proof, that the Printer of Donatus was in Haarlem.
