- About 120 binding-waste fragments of Donatus survive, all on vellum, printed with one or other of the anonymous “Dutch Prototypography” types. A single complete copy survives, in the Museum Meermanno-Westreenianum, The Hague. The number of editions the fragments represent is unknown, but by various calculations totals at least forty, and very likely more. The Scheide fragment is the only example in America of a Donatus printed with the Speculum type. It cannot be more narrowly dated than to the overall period of use of the Speculum type, from about 1463 to 1480. The Prototypography editions of the Ars minor were of more modest size than the early Mainz editions. The latter correspond in size to (Chancery paper) folios, the former to (Chancery paper) quartos. The Scheide fragment contains various manuscript annotations by an early user.
