  • 3 volumes of a 4-volume Bible produced in France (the third volume is not extant), containing several of the standard prefaces with certain exceptions.

  • Decoration: Northern French, possibly Picardy or Artois, ca. 1260s or 1270s. Contains historiated and pen-flourished initials throughout the three volumes and the Balliol coat of arms added to an initial in the preface to Joshua (vol. 1, fol. 326r).
  • Origin: Probably produced in Northern France (Picardy or Artois) in the 13th century.
Binding note:
  • Parchment over wooden boards, possibly executed in England in the late 19th century; edges of textblock gauffered and gilt.
Provenance:
  • Provenance: Late 13th century ownership inscription and anathema from the Sweetheart Abbey, a Cistercian monastery in Kirkcudbright, Scotland, in vol. 1, fol. 407v. Later in the possesion of Sir John Spottiswoode (1565-1639), Archbishop of St Andrews and Alexander Pringle (1837-1898) of Yair, Selkirkshire, who consigned it to Sotheby's London in 1895. Purchased by Robert Garrett, of Baltimore, Maryland, Class of 1897, in 1909 from the antiquarian bookseller Bernard Quaritch and donated to Princeton University in 1942.
