Abstract:

Collection of Anglo-Norman and Latin theological texts, primarily in verse. Notably the volume contains the only illustrated manuscript of the Le manuel des péchés, among 27 extant manuscripts

Contents:

1. fol. ii v-iv r: [Diagrams]. Prefatory series of moral and theological diagrams, comprised of concentric circles, roundels with Latin inscriptions, and connnecting lines; tinted in red, yellow, and blue.
2. fol. v r: [Unidentified verse prayer to the Virgin Mary].
3. fol. 1r-150v: [Le manuel des péchés]. Anglo-Norman verse text in nine numbered books; composed between 1250 and 1270 by an anonymous English cleric but often attributed to William de Wadington.
4. fol. 151r-164v: Romaunz des romaunz. Le roman des romans, an anonymous 13th-century Anglo-Norman verse homily on worldly and clerical corruption.
5. fol. 165r-170r: [Plainte de la Vièrge].
6. fols. 170v-171r: [Homily iii on the Pater Noster]. Maurice de Sully's homily, first petition only. In Latin with Anglo-Norman translation.
7. fol. 172v-198r: [Le château d'amour] Robert Grosseteste's Anglo-Norman verse, with a prose preface in Latin.

Decoration: Le manuel des péchés contains two historiated initials and 28 pen-and-ink or painted illustrations of exempla in the bas-de-page. See the entry in Medieval & Renaissance manuscripts in the Princeton University Library, volume 1, pages 401-402 for detailed descriptions of the miniatures. Series of moral and theological diagrams in red, yellow and blue (fol. ii v-iv r). 4-line champide initial (fol. 151r), and 2- and 3-line initials in blue and red throughout the rest of the MS.
Origin: Probably made in the East Midlands or upper East Anglia in the late 13th century.

Binding note:

Later binding. England, late 18th or early 19th century. Parchment over pasteboard. Blind-tooled filets along the perimeter.

Provenance:

Commissioned for Joan Tateshal. Owned by the Hollands of Norfolk in the early 17th century, later by Thomas Martin. Sold from his collection by S. Baker & G. Leigh to Thomas Tyrwhitt in 1774. Later acquired by Shirley Woolmer, then by T.N. Longman in the early 19th century and sold to Sir Thompas Phillipps. Acquired from his estate by H.P. Kraus who sold it to Robert H. Taylor, Class of 1930. His bequest to the Princeton University Library in 1985.
