The Pasquino wastebook is an accounting book of original entry, recording the lease or rental of livestock owned by Antonio di Pasquino and his four sons.
Script: Mercantesca, by several hands.
Decoration: None.

Binding note:

Italy, 15th century. Long-stitch binding in limpparchment wrapper, with a leather flap and three horizontal leather straps, the middle one extending around the entire book and closing through a loop. The strap probably had an oval buckle, now lost. Cover title (in a 15th-century hand): “Libro di socite e da loghagioni.”

Provenance:

Princeton MS. 131 is a wastebook kept by Antonio di Pasquino (1367-1435), also known as Antonio di Pasquino Broccardi, a wool draper from Volterra, Tuscany, and by his sons Natalano, Nofiero, Benedetto, and Girolamo di Pasquino. In his diversified business interests, Antonio di Pasquino often acted in partnership with his sons, who assumed full responsibility for the business from 1430. By that year, the Volterra catasto records that the Pasquino livestock holdings included some 350 head of cattle, 1,800 sheep with more than 500 lambs, and 100 pigs. A pencil inscription on the inside back wrapper, “Mar. 1898-UNAO,” is probably from a dealer or previous owner. Mrs. Ruth C. Montgomery (d. 1992) donated the manuscript to the Princeton University Library on 27 December 1991.
