Portraits

Housed in the Library’s Graphic Arts Collection are 17 portraits documenting and celebrating General Lafayette’s life, dating from the early 1780s to 1832. Highlights include a portrait of Lafayette depicted at the Battle of Yorktown (based on a painting by Jean-Baptiste Le Paeon); a political cartoon, “The Offering to Liberty,” depicting Lafayette marching chained French nobles to the ‘Goddess of the Noble Mind’ who sits atop the rubble of the Bastille; and a mezzotint portraying the 1792 arrest of Lafayette and his subsequent imprisonment in Olmütz, Austria in 1794.
