Page [1] inscription, translated into English, reads: "This little book - a gift, given to my little son. - Little Talking Bird - from his Father, Soloman James - Sound of Thunder Ravens - Chief of Shawahnegaw Village".
Page [16] inscription, translated into English, reads: "My own little Picture [Painted] Book Louis James - Shawahnegaw. Day of Mutual Greeting [New Year's Day] 1858. I am Twelve Years [Winters] old."
