Philadelphia, 1744, paperBenjamin Franklin became the official printer of Pennsylvania in 1730 (and of New Jersey in 1740), producing paper currency and proclamations such as this call to arms in response to the British declaration of war against France. Single-sheet, often oversize printed notices or advertisements are known as broadsides, and these would have been publicly posted or distributed to communicate information.
