- Lithographed title page; cover titles: Gardner's photographic sketch book of the war.
- 100 mounted unnumbered photographs of the operations of the Army of the Potomac in Virginia, etc. Each plate accompanied by leaf with descriptive letterpress.
- Each volume opens with a lithographic title page signed by A. R. Ward, but has since been ascribed to Alfred R. Waud.
- The photographs were taken by Barnard & Gibson (8); Alexander Gardner (16); J. Gardner (10); David Knox (4); Timothy H. O'Sullivan (45); William R. Pywell (3); J. Reekie (7); W. Morris Smith (1); Wood & Gibson (5); and D. B. Woodbury (1).
