Curatorial Note:

This book of Arabic proverbs was intended to help European readers learn Arabic, as indicated by its Latin explanations with Greek and Hebrew notes by Thomas Erpenius (Thomas van Erpe, d. 1624), the first European to produce an accurate book of Arabic grammar. The many blank pages before and after the text would have been used for readers’ handwritten annotations.

Ex copy has numerous marks of ownership: the early ms. initials ''[B.?] D.L.R.'' on the t.p.; an inscription on the t.p. verso--possibly in the same hand--that this copy was the gift of D. Mericus Casaubonus Js. Filius, the son of Isaac Casaubon and the dedicatee of this work; annotations throughout both the printed text and the blank leaves preceding and following the text, and the ink stamps of the Nottingham Free Public Libraries.
