Abstract:
  • This "yobidashi karuta" game is based on The Tale of Genji and was designed to simulate a Heian-period kai-awase (shell-matching) game. Each chapter from the Tale of Genji has a corresponding incense symbol (Genji kō no zu), which is printed on the board and on the text cards. The original set would have had 54 text cards, one for each of the Genji chapters. The rules of the game involve handing out all the text cards equally to all the players. Players must keep their cards hidden from the other players. Then, as players call out the titles of the chapters, whomever happens to have the card with that title can place it on the corresponding title on the board. (A player is not allowed to call out the titles on his or her own cards.) The players who get rid of all their cards first in this manner are the winners. To make it extra challenging, the script used on the cards is not the same as that written on the board, but the matching incense symbols are identical.
