- Dark reddish brown goatskin over oak (?) boards ; unsupported link stitch with three sewing stations without kettle stitch. The front and back covers are blind embossed. An outer frame was produced by a rectangular tool with egg-and-dart pattern. At each corner of the center rectangular field is a fleur-de-lis stamp. The spine is decorated with five horizontal bands comprised of fillets. The fore-edge of the front board has two pins intended to catch rings attached to triple-braided leather straps. All that remains of the straps are bits of leather anchored in two sets of three small holes near the fore-edge of the back cover.

- Description:
-
- Ms. codex.
- Title from printed catalog.
- Collation: Parchment ; fol. 278 ; foliation in brown ink.
- Layout: 23 long lines per page ; hardpoint ruling.
- Description: Written by a single scribe in a Palestinian-style minuscule script ; of the 12th century titles of the Gospels in gold epigraphic majuscule script ; lists of chapter titles and the colophon of each gospel in alexandrinischer Auszeichnungsmaiuskel script, the former in carmen innk, the latter in gold ; text and scribal note in black ink, as usual in Palestinian manuscripts ; the text of the canon tables is in carmine ink ; some ekphonetic neumes in red ; notes and added liturgical references in several hands.
- Decoration: This Gospel book has an important place in the study of Byzantine provincial manuscript illumination. Garrett MS. 3 shows considerable dependance upon Constantinopolitan works of the early 12th century in its ornamental vocabulary, evangelist depictions, and the rather sophisticated connections between text and image. At the same time, Garrett MS. 3 looks ahead to works in the fully developed "decorative style," in that it is relatively small codex, written in black ink, having simple canon tables, evangelist portraits integral to the volume (only two survive in the manuscript), and large square "carpet" headpieces, some with latticework patterns, on the opening page of each gospel.
